Chapter 12

Cassius didn’t like the look in her eyes or the thoughts in her mind. It wasn’t polite to intrude, so he withdrew to allow her time to think. Dark circles were beginning to form under her eyes, and when she yawned once more, he chastised himself. It was close to one o’clock in the morning, and she was a human who needed to sleep. While rising from the sofa, he offered one hand. “Come.”

Without hesitation, she slid her warm hand into his much cooler one. He lifted her from the sofa and pulled her into his arms, enjoying the length of her body against his. “You’re tired. I know I should allow time for sleep, but I’d prefer to dance with you under the stars.”

Her cheeks lifted in a smile against his chest. “I’m game.”

After pausing beside the stereo system to push a button, Cassius led her to the patio doors, swung one open, and strolled onto the deck with Sophia’s hand still clasped in his own. He spun her around before pulling her snug against his chest. She nestled into him, sighed deeply, and lifted her face to his. In this moment, she was more beautiful than he ever remembered. “You take my breath away, Sophia.”

She didn’t shy away, but brightly smiled at his compliment. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”

A haunting melody streamed through the open patio doors onto the deck, and Cassius began to sway. Sophia chuckled against his chest, her breath warm and sweet. He twirled her once more before sliding his hands along her curves, admiring every indent, and the way she seemed to move perfectly in tune with his body.

His gaze lifted to the mountains in the background as he lost himself in the past. “You know, you used to love to dance. You’d plan gatherings, inviting tribes and common folk, and we’d dance all night long. Your cheeks would be rosy, and your laughter warmed the hearts of everyone by the night’s end.”

“Share the memory with me. Can you?”

“I can’t share it in that way, but we are connected by blood, and you can see into my mind. It’s how I spoke to you earlier. All you have to do is search for the thread. Steal us away to that time, Sophia.”

Her eyes closed as she focused on the molecules of his blood now coursing in her mind. The thread was there, and she latched onto it, hoping to share his memory.

“Your father will accept Cassius with time. He’s a good man, daughter.”

Sophia glanced over her shoulder to the woman fidgeting with a white, silk bow at the base of her spine. The dress dragged the floor and spread out in waves of lace and silk, glimmering in the morning sunlight streaming through the window.

“You are a beautiful bride.” The woman sniffed and grabbed a handkerchief. “I will miss you, and so will your sisters.”

In a flash of bright light, she stood on a green lawn that expanded for miles. Sunlight streamed through the trees as they swayed in the breeze, and the aroma of wildflowers filled the air.
